Aesthetics and Archetypes CFP

Sheffield Gothic is pleased to announce the fourth annual conference and showcase event:

Reimagining the Gothic 2018: Aesthetics and Archetypes

26th-28th of October.

Skull SHEFGOTH

Reimagining the Gothic is an ongoing project that seeks to explore how the Gothic can be re-read, re-analysed, and re-imagined. We encourage both public interest and new academic avenues from students and scholars who wish to present on the Gothic using interdisciplinary and creative methods. Papers for ‘Reimagining the Gothic: Aesthetics and Archetypes’ should explore the many manifestations and evolutions of Gothic aesthetics and archetypes: from Danse Macabre to the New Romantics, from vaulted archways to industrial wastelands, villainous Counts to vampire Queens.

The conference is open to all undergraduates, postgraduates and early career researchers of any field, and joint or interdisciplinary papers are most welcome. We are inviting the submission of abstracts, which should be no more than 300 words, plus a short bio to be sent to Sheffield Gothic at reimagininggoth15@gmail.com. Papers should be no more than twenty minutes, and we will also accept panel proposals. In addition to conventional papers we are also inviting proposals for papers with creative or performative elements such as artwork, photography, audio-visual pieces, dramatic readings or performances (be these live or pre-recorded). If you would like more information, please contact us. The deadline for submissions is Monday the 13th of August.

As Reimagining the Gothic is a project that seeks to encourage new and unique thoughts about the Gothic, we will consider all submissions from any discipline. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Art and architecture
  • Comics and Graphic Novels
  • Conceptions, misconceptions and Sensationalism
  • Digital media
  • Fashion
  • Gender and sexuality
  • Gothic stereotypes and tropes
  • Heroes and villains
  • Monsters and/or monstrosity
  • Music
  • Origins and evolutions
  • Subcultures (Steampunk/ Victoriana etc.)

As always, these are simply suggestions. We hope to make the symposium as diverse as possible and so submissions of all natures are welcome.

We will also be hosting an interactive creative showcase on the same theme. Any applicants who wish to display their topic creatively in a public display are welcome to include a showcasing idea with their abstracts. For more information, please contact us at reimagininggoth15@gmail.com or refer to the accompanying Creative CFP.

‘Reimagining the Gothic:Aesthetics and Archetypes’ is generously sponsored by the AHPGR Forum at the University of Sheffield.
