Gothic Visions

Gothic Visions is a one day symposium exploring the role of visual culture, including portraiture, in the Gothic tradition, hosted by The Centre for the History of the Gothic at the University of Sheffield.

Gothic Visions will take place at the Humanities Research Institute, University of Sheffield on Monday 2 March 2020 Monday 30 March 2020, from 9.30am – 4.30pm. The event is free but please make sure you register for the event. You can book a free ticket here.

This one day event is aimed at PhD students, early career researchers, and academics working on the idea of visual culture within the Gothic. The morning session will consist of a workshop addressing ideas about portraiture and visual culture and how they relate to the Gothic tradition from the eighteenth century onwards. The afternoon session will consist of two research papers delivered by Professor Elliott and Dr Wynne, followed by questions.

Guest speakers and workshop leads: Professor Kamilla Elliott (Lancaster), Dr Catherine Wynne (Hull).

Professor Kamilla Elliott is Professor of Literature and Media at the University of Lancaster. She is the author of Portraiture and British Gothic Fiction: The Rise of Picture Identification, 1764-1835 (Johns Hopkins University Press in 2012). She is currently researching a sequel, British Victorian Fiction and the Rise of Picture Identification, 1836-1918.

Dr Catherine Wynne is Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Hull. She is the author of Lady Butler: War artist and traveller, 1846-1933 (Four Courts 2019), and the editor of Bram Stoker and the stage: reviews, reminiscences, essays and fiction (Routledge 2012).
